Meditation for the Day
The woman came in to treatment during the cold winter months without a coat. So one of the male staff, a recovering addict himself, got one for her. She had learned on the street that no one gives you anything for free, especially not the men. “What does he want from me?” she asked her counselor in a very suspicious tone. “What are his motives?” Then with anger in her voice she said, “If he’s expecting sexual favors, he can go to hell!” But he was not expecting sex, or anything else. Her counselor smiled and said, “The reason he gave you that coat is because you needed it. He’s just doing what someone did for him when he first got here. Our hope is that someday you’ll do the same.” And that’s how this program works: we pass on to the newcomer what was given to us, whether it was a coat or a ride to a meeting. If we are not generous, our recovery becomes weak and compromised. So we show gratitude and protect our recovery by being as generous with every newcomer as our peers have been with us.
Prayer for the Day
I thank God for all the people who gave me their time, guidance and love as they welcomed me to this recovering community. I pray that I will always be as generous and giving with the newcomer as the members of this fellowship have been with me.
