Meditation for the Day
In early recovery, we’re told to share our stories and tell others about what happened in the past. We’re also asked to prepare for the future, to secure viable housing and employment. Then someone comes along and says, “Don’t focus on the past or the future. You need to be in the present moment, focus on the here and now.” That can be confusing. As with most things in life, the issue here is finding a balance. Some of us tend to spend so much time thinking about the past and worrying about the future that we fail to do the work that is in front of us today. Or we try to live our lives today as if we had no past or will never have to face the future. Neither one of those two extremes will be helpful to our recovery. We need to strike a balance between these equally valid concerns. What happened to us in the past sets up the work that we need to do today. If we do our work well, we’ll be able to stay clean and have a better future. Our past, present and future are connected; our job is to keep them in balance.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I will be willing to do the Step work that requires me to examine my past so that I will know what work I need to do today. I thank my Higher Power for the hope I have today for a better future as an active member of this 12 Step fellowship.
